Challenging French nuclear testing in the Pacific 1995 – 1996
Opposed by thirteen Pacific nations, France was testing nuclear explosions at Moruroa Atoll since 1966.
Attempting to silence opposition, French President Mitterand ordered state-sponsored terrorism against a friendly nation: on July 10th, 1985, in Aukland Harbour, two French secret agent frogmen bombed and sank Rainbow Warrior, Greenpeace’s peaceful protest flagship. One man drowned. [1]
In 1995–‘6, angry New Zealanders were eager to sail in a peace flotilla opposing further testing. I was lucky enough to go.
France halted nuclear testing in the Pacific in 1996.
